West Virginia High School Football Huddle

The West Virginia All-Stars used a rock solid defense to defeat the Ohio Stars 24-3 in the annual Rudy Mumley Ohio Valley Athletic Conference All-Star Charity Football Classic.

West Virginia held Ohio to minus-6 yards rushing and 62-yards in total offense to give the Mountaineer State its second straight victory in the all-star game.

Match-ups Announced for McDonald's OVAC Kickoff Night in West Virginia and Ohio

The Ohio Valley Football and Band Jamboree is now known as the McDonald's OVAC Kickoff Night presented by Trinity Health System.

On Wednesday officials announced the line-up for the four-game opening night celebration on August 26th in Wheeling and Steubenville, Ohio.

The Intelligencer/Wheeling News-Register reports that the biggest game will be at Harding stadium in Steubenville where the Big Red will have a rematch against Inkster (Michigan). Last year, Inkster beat Steubenville snapping its 69-game regular season win streak.

Finalists for Parkersburg Head Football Coaching Position

According to the West Virginia Metro News, the Parkersburg School District is considering ten finalists for the head coach of the Big Reds.

The opening was created at the end of the season when Bernie Buttrey resigned after eight years as head coach with a 66-30 record and two state championships in 2006 and 2007.

Madonna Wins West Virginia Class A Football Title

Madonna High School ended a 22-year drought by beating Man 27-7 to win the West Virginia Class A football championship.

The Intelligencer & Wheeling News-Register reports that Madonna was led by quarterback Max Nogay, who was named the game MVP. It was the Blue Dons first state title since 1987.

High School Football America

When you see a final score like 77-71 in overtime, you'd assume it was five or six overtime game, which resulted in the pinball-like score. Friday night's 77-71 win by Parkersburg South over Wheeling Park was only a two overtime game that decided a 71-all tie after regulation.

The News and Sentinel reports that 22-touchdowns were scored while the teams combined for over 1,000 yards in total offense.

It won't be a Hollywood premiere, but the stars will be shining on August 25th when Tony Dungy's RED ZONE '09 kicks-off the high school football season with a two-hour motivation show that will be shown in over 460 select movie theaters across America.

The former Indianapolis Colts head coach will be joined by three-time National Football League MVP Peyton Manning, Defensive Player of the Year Bob Sanders, Dallas Cowboys Hall of Fame Receiver Michael Irvin, USC Head Coach Pete Carroll and many others during this first-of-its-kind theater event.

Tony Dungy’s RED ZONE ’09 gives athletes unprecedented access to professional coaches and players who will present inside tips on football, the keys to winning at any position, and discuss the importance of hard work, team building, conditioning, skills development and mental toughness. A news release on the event states that regardless of ability level, audiences of all ages will be inspired to work hard, eat right, stay focused and expand their skills – on and off the field.

In addition, USC Coach Carroll will specifically address how parents can help their high school athletes prepare and potentially increase their chances of receiving college athletic scholarships.

Top-ranked South Charleston (12-0) dodged a bullet on Saturday beating Martinsburg 28-21 to advance to its first appearance in the West Virginia Class AAA state semifinals since 1994. West Virginia's Class AA bracket is a very interesting one this year when it comes to the second round. Wayne is back in the post-season for the 10th straight year and a win against Shady Spring on Friday could set-up a showdown with defending state champ Bluefield in the second round. Wayne's post-season streak is the longest active one in the state. The Pioneers have also reached the semifinals four straight years, with quarterback Joey Ferguson leading the way during the last two seasons, including winning the AA championship in 2006. Last year, Bluefield and James Monroe battled for West Virginia's AA football championship. Halloween night, the were battling to make sure that they both make the post-season. Both teams entered the game ranked in the state's Top 10 and when the smoke cleared, defending state champ Bluefield stood the victor 34-21. Defending Pennsylvania State Champs Looking to Make Some Noise in Kickoff Classic Tripleheader

Pennsylvania's defending 4A and 3A state champs will find out how good their 2008 teams are Monday when they face national powers in the Friends of Coal Prep Classic in Wheeling, West Virginia.

4A champ Pittsburgh Central Catholic opens its regular season with two-time national champ Lakeland (FL), while 3A champ Thomas Jefferson faces nationally-ranked Glenville from Cleveland, Ohio. Glenville opened its season last week knocking off St. Ignatius (#16 USA Today Super 25).

In the nightcap of the tripleheader, four-time defending West Virginia Class A state champ Wheeling Central Catholic will played Steubenville Catholic Central (OH).

Ohio-West Virginia Football Jamboree Continues to Grow

A bigger and better Wheeling Hospital Football and Band Jamboree will be held next Friday and Saturday at Wheeling Island Stadium. Event organizers have announced that the second year, which features high school football teams from Ohio and West Virginia, event has grown from eight teams last year to 18 this year.

With more teams, the Jamboree will now be spread-out over two days instead of one. Friday's schedule features four games with Ohio teams and then five games on Saturday with schools from West Virginia.

Friday's Ohio action kicks-off at 1PM with East Liverpool playing Harrison Central, followed by Shadyside taking on Shenandoah at 3:10PM. Meadowbrook will square-off with Martins Ferry at 5:20PM with the nightcap featuring St. Clairsville and Cambridge at 8 o'clock.

Here's Saturday's match-ups...

11AM - Oak Glen vs Brooke
1:10PM - John Marshall vs. Tyler Consolidated
3:20PM - Wheeling Park vs. University
5:30PM - Weir vs. Linsly
7:40PM - Wheeling Central vs. Magnolia

Bluefield Reigns Supreme in West Virgina AA Title Game

57 was Bluefield's lucky number in the West Virginia Class AA championship game against James Monroe (12-2).

Bluefield (13-0) senior quarterback Will Cole threw two 57-yard touchdown passes in the third quarter to bring his team by from a 12-7 halftime deficit and beat James Monroe 20-12. It was the Beavers third Super Six win since 1994.

West Virginia Super 6 Preview

Wheeling Central will be going after a record-tying four straight West Virginia high school football championship when it plays Williamstown in the Class A championship on Saturday.

These two have meet in the last two title games with the Maroon Knights winning 35-20 in 2006 and 14-7 last season. Wheeling Central is trying to tie Moorefield's record of four straight championships between 1996 and 1999. Central's also riding a 32-game win streak.

In the AAA championship game Saturday Parkersburg will play St. Albans. Parkersburg will be playing in it's 14th title game since 1950 with seven championship trophies.

In AA, Bluefield will take-on James Monroe. This two met a month ago with Bluefield winning 14-7.

Some late breaking news out of West Virginia...Martinsburg, which has played in the Class AAA state championship four times in the last six years, has been forced to forfeit its first two wins of the year against Morgantown and Potomac Falls of Virginia for using an academically ineligible player.

Martinsburg reported the infraction and is appealing the penalty of forfeiting its 2-0 start. The player in question apparently played only sparingly and moved into the Martinsburg area from another state.

Martinsburg won its game Friday night game against Turner Ashby of Virginia 56-8. Here are the rest of the scores from the Mountaineer State.

658 Yards Rushing In A Game....Not A National Record!

Matewan High School running back Paul McCoy rushed for 658 yards Friday night in his team's 64-0 win over Burch, however, believe it or not, he may not have set a national record!

The 658 yards, which translates to .037386 miles, tops the record listed by the National Federation of State High School Association, which was 619 yards set by Ronney Jenkins of Oxnard, California in 1995. However, a high school records historian Doug Huff says the recognized record is 739 yards by John Giannantonio of Netcong, New Jersey in a game against Mountain Lakes in 1950.

McCoy gained his 658 yards on just 29 carries and scored 10 touchdowns. He averaged 22.7 yards per carry, and scored on touchdown runs of 69, 1, 52, 56, 52, 20, 31, 84, 87 and 25 yards. McCoy also had a 77-yards TD run called back on a penalty.

McCoy did set a West Virgina record for rushing and touchdowns in a game. The national record for TDs in a game is 12 by Ken Pearson of Hugo, Colorado in 1930.

High School Football Practice Underway

Hot temperatures greet high school football players across the state. It was the first official day for practice, but players won't slap on the pads until August 4th. The regular season begins August 25th.

Morgantown is the defending AAA state champ, Weir won the 2005 AA title and Wheeling Central won last year's A championship.

Pocahontas Coal Champions Classic

West Virginia high school football fans will get quite a preview of the 2006 season on August 18th in Bluefield when Mitchell Stadium will host the Pocahntas Coal Champi-ons Classic. Seven teams, two of which made it to state championship games last year, will take part in a day-long preseason scrimmage that's being billed as a "grid-o-rama.

Bluefield, Graham, Mount View, Richlands, George Wythe, Pulaski County and Rockbridge County will take part of a schedule that will see each team play two, two-quarter games.

Super Six Stays In Wheeling

The Super Six West Virginia State High School Football Championships will stay in Wheeling for two more years. State officials voted 6-2 in favor of Wheeling. Former host Charleston was the only other town to big on hosting the games.
